FAQ

Q: What types of activities can be hosted at Box of Moonlight?

A: Box of Moonlight is suitable for photo and video shoots, film productions, music videos, dance videos, and fashion shoots, to name a few. The space is frequently used by filmmakers, photographers, artists, and event producers looking for a flexible warehouse venue in Brooklyn.

Q: Where is Box of Moonlight located?

A: Box of Moonlight is located at the crossroads of Bushwick, Bed Stuy, and Ocean Hill in Brooklyn, New York. We’re about a three minute walk from the Halsey J train station.

Q:Do you have heat? / Do you have AC?

A: Yes. Box of Moonlight has a 10 ton HVAC system with ducts in our main warehouse space, allowing us to be cozy on the coldest days of winter and cool on the hottest days of summer. Additional space heaters and a supplemental AC unit help us regulate the temperature of the peripheral spaces.

Q: What is the entry process?

A: In the vast majority of cases, an employee will be on site to guide you into our space and get you situated. In some cases, we provide a lockbox code and a brief entry video for self-guided access. If your booking requires self-guided entry, we’ll let you know in advance and provide clear instructions.

Q: Do you have a speaker? Do you have a c-stand?

A: Yes. We offer a range of add-on production gear, including speakers, c-stands, fog machines, chairs, tables, and lighting. A full gear list is available here.

Q: What’s your cancellation policy?

A: A 50% deposit is required to reserve your date and time. Cancellations made more than 7 days before entry receive a full refund of payments made. Within 7 days, the rental must be paid in full and is eligible for a 50% refund. Cancellations within 24 hours of entry are non-refundable.

In special cases where the renter reserves multiple days of time (for example, a weekend or a week), we may establish a different timeline. For example, your ability to get a full refund may end 2 or 3 weeks in advance. This will be explicitly agreed upon, well in advance.

Q: What is your smoking policy?

A: Smoking cigarettes, marijuana, and hookahs is not permitted indoors. Guests may smoke only outside and away from entrances. Indoor smoking that is not promptly stopped may result in the event ending early. Smoking for the artistic merits of a production scene can be planned for in advance. A movie mobster smoking a cigar for 15 minutes may be negotiated, but a group of music video partygoers smoking joints for three hours may be declined.

Q: Are there any restrictions on decor and messy materials?

A: Our goal is for the venue to be returned in the state that it was found. Messy materials like loose glitter, confetti, fake blood, paint, pyrotechnics, can sometimes be planned for in advance, and may sometimes result in our decline of your rental request. Any activity that leaves a permanent stain, or a permanent hole or alteration of our floors, walls, ceilings, and set may be declined.

Q: Is there parking?

A: While there are no dedicated parking spaces for our building, there is free street parking in the surrounding blocks. Our neighborhood of Ocean Hill is easier to park in than other more crowded neighborhoods. Some renters with a lot of gear park on our sidewalk next to one of our two entrances. After loading in, they move their vehicle to street parking for the rest of the day.

Q: Is setup time included?

A: You must pay for time from the moment your first crew member enters to set up through to the last moment that your crew member exits, allowing us to lock the building. For example, if you are hosting a birthday party from 9pm to midnight, you may need to pay to start your rental at 8pm to set up snacks and the DJ, and you may need to rent until 12:30am, giving you 30 minutes to tidy and reset the venue.

Q: Is cleaning included?

A: No. Renters are responsible for working with venue staff to tidy and reset the space at the end of their booking. This typically includes collecting cups, disposing of trash, and wiping up spills. If you’d like to pay your own cleaning person to arrive during the last hour of your rental and clean, you may.

Q: Do you host raves?

A: We cannot host raves. Our audio policy requires a quieter decimal level after 10:30pm, making the late nights more suitable for late shoots.

Q: Are there any ways that my rental can be forced to end early?

A: Yes. By renting Box of Moonlight, you agree that the venue reserves the right to end an event early if serious issues arise and are not promptly resolved during your rental. While this most often applies to events, it may also apply to productions.

If this occurs, house lights may be turned on and power to audio systems and mood lighting may be shut off.

A production or event may be ended early if any of the following occur and are not immediately and effectively addressed:

- Underage drinking, including minors consuming alcohol and not being promptly removed with no reentry
- Property damage
- Fire hazards or unsafe use of equipment
- Physical altercations that are not promptly de-escalated and resolved
- Smoking of marijuana or cigarettes indoors
- Refusal by the renter, performers, musicians, or DJs to comply with the venue’s audio policy

This policy exists to ensure the safety of guests, staff, and the building, and to protect the venue’s ability to continue operating responsibly.

Q: Is there a kitchen at your venue?

A: Renters are welcome to prepare and serve food at Box of Moonlight. We provide a mini-fridge, but no stove, sink, or food-prep equipment is included.

Q: Does your space get much daylight?

A: Our main warehouse space can get a small amount of daylight through two doors and through one window. We usually keep these portals closed, allowing total control of the lighting through our lighting gear. Our back stairwell also has a skylight. We’d be open to temporarily covering the skylight for an all-day shoot with advance notice.

Q: Can I use those tube lights in your venue photos?

A: Yes. As of February 2026, four Nanlite Pavotube II 30XR tube lights are included with every rental to help beautify your shoot. All renters also have free use of 2 Nanlite FC-500C spotlights. These six LED RGB lighting tools can be any color, saturation, and any warm or cool white light.

Q: Does the freight elevator work?

A: No. We are new renters in this building, and the freight elevator has not been operational for many years. The door is sealed and cannot be opened. For now, the second floor is accessible by stairs, only. We are actively looking to improve our accessibility in the future.

Q: I rented your projector. How will I send video?

A: Our projector connects via HDMI. We provide an adapter that supports both HDMI and USB-C output (for most laptops and tablets), but you’ll need to bring your own device for playback.

If you’ve rented speakers, you can connect using a 1/8" (3.5mm) audio cable, which we can provide. Bluetooth is also available, though it introduces a slight audio delay. You’re also welcome to use your own speakers if preferred.

Q: How does your TV wall work?

A: The TV wall is connected to a central laptop. Whatever is displayed full-screen on that laptop appears across all monitors simultaneously. You can easily display photos or videos from sources like YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox, AirDrop, or your own files, and switch content between takes.

You can also control the look of the wall—setting some screens to blue, static, or off. Displaying a different image on each screen simultaneously isn’t possible live and would need to be added in post-production.

For live feeds, renters sometimes use Zoom or FaceTime by calling the laptop from a phone.

You’re also welcome to connect your own laptop directly using HDMI or USB-C.

Q: I heard that I can rent a space on the first floor?

A: We do not currently rent the first floor, but we are able to pass along your inquiry to our landlord, who owns an empty ground floor space in our building. In the past groups have rented this area from the landlord, which includes a large carpeted church space and a handful of office-type rooms. Renters can use this space to shoot scenes and hold events. It’s often popular as a green room for crafty, hair and makeup, wardrobe, holding, etc.
